19) After the half logs are just the right temperature, they are ready
to come down on the production floor where they will be sliced into veneer... |
20) An operator hoists the log in place on the slicer. The pneumatic
"dogs" hold the log in place. |
21) A last minute fine honing of the slicer blade... watch those fingers!
This blade in incredibly sharp. |
22) Before we actually slice the log, lets take a side trip to the
knife sharpening room. Don't even think of touching these as they can actually
cut faster to the bone than a razor blade... |
23) A rough honing to take away any nicks... |
24) And a Final honing on a Super High Tech computerized system... |
25) The knife is in place and must perform an incredibly accurate job.
It can be set to slice as thin as 1/85" over a 13+ foot length ... |
26) This is the log, just as it hits the pressure bar which slightly
compresses the wood before it is sliced.. |
27) The wood travels into the blade and the cut has started. There
are tremendous forces at work here. The log comes down on an angle to help
the slicing action... |
