It’s called an “itinerant barber’s chest” as
it is based off of an early Chinese version of the same. Typically,
these itinerant tradesmen (barbers, shoe shine guys, etc) would walk from
town to town selling their services. Clients would sit on the bench
and the drawers held all the tools of the trade. This one is much
more elaborate and far too heavy to throw over one’s shoulder. Approx.
29" x 15.5" x 18"
Curly Cherry for the main body, Redwood burl,
& Wenge accents. Leather drawer bottoms, and you’ll see in the
open photo a long brass rod. This slides down from the top to secure
all the drawers, then simply close the top, lock it, and with one key everything
is locked. |
